Depression and the Elderly

So many people young and old are living their best lives. So many people,as well, are living in a silenced misery. The AFSP reports the number 1. highest risk of suicide are those 45 to 54 and number 2. being 85 and older (especially men). You never hear that on the news!
What does this tell us? Imagine, if you will, that you are an elderly person who for many years had a happy long marriage and lived many years of independence. It takes one event whether a fall, stroke, or even just the natural aging process for life to change forever. You are now dependent on others to at least some degree; your loved ones have passed on; you feel like a burden; you don't have all your senses to even stay connected. You cant heal properly and you might even wet on yourself. You feel like you don't want to live any longer because 'what is their left to live for' when you probably only have a short time left anyway.
Working in geriatric psychiatry, I saw first hand these scenarios. We interacted with the families to try and build back the bond that was lost. So many people due to financial or home situations place their loved ones in nursing homes where care is known to be less than optimum. People like my grandma would sit in their room all day unless begged by family members to participate. Just think of the sadness you would feel if your brain capacity started decreasing, you couldn't walk well, and you just sat in your room all day! That for sure would make me grumpy! At the hospital we had to explain to the extended family the importance of still reaching out, even if they appear disheveled and cross. Young or old we all want love! You never know when the last time you will be able to talk to your elders! Have you called your elder today? Have you hugged them today? Have you done what you would like to be done unto you today?
